Because the Space Race was a military race with the Soviets.  After Sputnik in the late 50s people freaked they could rain bombs down on our heads from space; the moon was the new figurative and literal high ground for that battle at the peak of the Cold War.  That’s why Kennedy said we need to do it in a decade and why it got done so fast and why there are so many pictures of the American flag being planted in the moon ground.  After we won that race, there was no useful reason to go back. That thing about the romance and adventure of astronauts making kids dream and getting them interested in science and engineering, that was a completely unforeseen fortunate byproduct.  It was a good after-the-fact hindsight reason for the venture.
